Internet for Umrah: Makkah and Madinah

Short answer: on Umrah, internet is a need rather than a comfort: keeping in touch with your group, finding your hotel and video-calling family back home all go through your phone. Install the Saudi Arabia eSIM at home and be online the moment you land.

Your options

1. Roaming on your home SIM: Most carriers put Saudi Arabia in their "rest of world" tier. Over a two-week Umrah trip, daily passes add up to a serious sum, and pay-as-you-go rates are worse (our roaming vs eSIM guide). Readers travelling from elsewhere in the Gulf should check what their own plan covers; it varies by carrier.

2. A local SIM: Jeddah and Madinah airports have STC, Mobily and Zain kiosks; registration asks for your passport and a fingerprint. After a long journey, the queue and the paperwork mean keeping your group waiting.

3. eSIM: Set it up at home, with a clear head. When the plane lands, your phone joins the Saudi network by itself; at the airport your only job is to find your group.

The coverage reality

  • Coverage is strong in Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah; around the two Haram areas the network can slow at peak times, and that is true on every carrier.
  • Hotel Wi-Fi cannot carry that many guests at once in the busy periods; have your own connection.
  • On the bus or train between Makkah and Madinah, the main route is covered.

Practical tips

  • Group communication runs on WhatsApp; keep your notifications on so you do not miss your group's messages (our WhatsApp guide).
  • The Nusuk app, which handles permits such as the Rawdah visit in Madinah, needs a live connection; do not leave it to the hotel Wi-Fi.
  • Do not leave the video call home to the hotel Wi-Fi either; it slows down in the evening. On mobile data, a ten-minute video call uses roughly 100 to 150 MB.
  • Travelling with elderly relatives? Set up their eSIMs too; our step-by-step setup guide helps.
  • For the whole journey, our Umrah route guide is ready, with a plan recommendation.
