How to Use WhatsApp Abroad

Short answer: WhatsApp works abroad exactly as it does at home, and your number does not change. All it needs is an internet connection, and you get that from an eSIM instead of expensive roaming. Here is everything people ask.

Does my number change?

No. Your WhatsApp account is registered to your home number and stays that way. The eSIM only provides data; it has nothing to do with your WhatsApp identity. Your home SIM stays in the phone, and your WhatsApp, your chats and your groups carry on as if nothing had happened.

The right setup: two lines, one phone

  1. Install your eSIM and select it as the data line.
  2. Switch data roaming off for your home SIM; it is the only source of a surprise bill.
  3. Your home SIM stays open for calls and texts (bank verification codes included); data flows through the eSIM.

That is all. WhatsApp neither knows nor cares which line the data comes from.

How much data does a video call use?

  • Voice call: Roughly 0.5 to 1 MB a minute; you could talk for hours over coffee and it would hardly register.
  • Video call: Roughly 5 to 15 MB a minute. Someone who video-calls home for half an hour every evening uses about 1.5 to 3 GB a week; choose your plan with that in mind.
  • Photos and voice messages: In everyday use the total stays under a few hundred MB.

Are calls restricted in some countries?

Messaging works almost everywhere. A few countries are different: in the United Arab Emirates WhatsApp voice and video calls are blocked, for tourists too; in Egypt calls are restricted at times; in China WhatsApp is blocked altogether. These are country-wide rules and apply whichever SIM you use. In those countries, arrange important conversations by message; for Dubai, our Internet and WhatsApp in Dubai guide covers what does work.

The common mistake

Getting a new foreign number and moving WhatsApp to it: it is unnecessary, and everyone in your contacts loses you. With an eSIM there is no need; your number travels with you.

Ready? Look up the eSIM for your destination; setup takes two minutes, and your WhatsApp is the same on the road as at home.

Where are you going?

Type your destination and see the plans. Visiting several countries? We recommend the one plan that covers the whole route.
