Internet and WhatsApp in Dubai
Updated: October 2026

The most important thing first: in the United Arab Emirates, WhatsApp voice and video calls do not work. This is not a network fault or a SIM problem; it is a country-wide rule on internet calling (VoIP), and it applies to everyone, tourists included. Whichever SIM, eSIM or hotel you choose, the situation is the same. Plan around it.
What works, what does not
- Works: WhatsApp messages, photos and voice notes; Instagram, YouTube, maps, banking; all ordinary internet traffic.
- Does not work: WhatsApp and FaceTime calls.
- To video-call home: The apps licensed in the UAE work: Botim (the standard choice there), Zoom, Microsoft Teams and Google Meet. Get your family to install Zoom or Botim before you leave; in Dubai, that one detail saves the holiday.
Your data options
Roaming on your home SIM: The UAE sits in the most expensive "rest of world" tier at most carriers. Depending on yours, that means a day pass of roughly ten pounds or dollars a day, or pay-as-you-go rates that turn a short break into a three-figure bill.
A tourist SIM at the airport: Etisalat (e&) and du both have counters, but the tourist packages are pricey, they need your passport for registration, and there is a queue after baggage reclaim.
eSIM: Install the Dubai and UAE eSIM at home; when the plane lands at DXB, your data is ready. No registration, no queue.
Coverage and speed
Network quality in Dubai and Abu Dhabi is among the best in the world; 5G is almost everywhere, and speeds are faster than most visitors see at home. Even on a desert safari, coverage is surprisingly good. Hotel and mall Wi-Fi is strong too, but the calling restriction applies on Wi-Fi as well.
Practical tips
- The metro, taxis (Careem and Uber) and restaurant bookings all run through apps; Dubai without mobile data is hard work.
- In the summer heat, plans move indoors; sharing your location in a mall saves the meeting point.
- If calls matter: plan your calling hours around Botim or Zoom; for work calls, Teams runs without trouble.
