Internet in Italy: A Traveller's Guide
Updated: October 2026

Short answer: Buying a local SIM in Italy means passport registration, and the station kiosks charge tourist prices; the Italy eSIM skips both. Here are the details.
Italy's SIM rules
By law, every SIM card in Italy must be registered against an ID document; for a tourist that means a visit to a shop with your passport. The dealers in stations like Roma Termini or Milano Centrale speed the process up, but they price it for tourists too, with a queue thrown in. An eSIM has no registration step: install it at home and land in Rome already connected.
Coverage, honestly
- Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan, Naples: strong coverage and widespread 5G (TIM, Vodafone IT and WindTre networks).
- On the high-speed line (Frecciarossa and Italo) coverage is generally good; short drops in the Apennine tunnels are normal. The trains have Wi-Fi, but it slows down when the carriage is full.
- Sicily, Sardinia, Capri, the Amalfi coast: The country plan works there just the same; on boat trips the signal fades as you leave the shore.
- In the narrow streets of the historic centres (Venice above all) a jumping GPS dot is normal; the problem is the stone walls, not the network.
What uses data in Italy
- Museum and site bookings: The Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper; they all run on online reservations, and there is often no ticket at the door.
- QR menus and restaurant booking apps are standard now.
- Trenitalia and Italo tickets are cheaper in the app, and there is no queue.
For a week's trip 3 to 5 GB is realistic; our Italy route guide has a city-by-city plan.
Practical tips
- You can ask for Wi-Fi in a café, but Italian espresso culture is "drink and go", not "sit and stay"; have mobile data.
- Crossing into France or Switzerland as well? The regional Europe eSIM makes more sense than a country plan.
- A roaming pass on your home SIM, or an eSIM? The sums are in our roaming vs eSIM guide. If your SIM is from the UK, the US, Canada or Australia, Italy is a roaming country for it, by day pass or capped allowance depending on the carrier.
