Two countries, one setup

The Iberian tour is told in four cities: Gaudí in Barcelona, museums and evening walks in Madrid, hills climbed by tram in Lisbon, wine cellars on the riverbank in Porto. Most tours squeeze in Seville or Toledo along the way; two countries, two languages and a lot of tickets in ten days.

On this route internet is not a luxury, it is the ticket: the Sagrada Família and the Alhambra sell out weeks ahead on your phone, the tram and metro card in Lisbon is topped up in an app, and most restaurants have switched to QR menus. There is no passport check between Spain and Portugal, but your home carrier charges its roaming rate in both. With the Europe eSIM set up before you board, you are on a local network in both countries; when you cross the border, your phone joins the new operator by itself.

5 GBfor a 10-day tour

How much data do you need?

For a ten-day tour, 5 GB is enough for most travellers: maps, ticket apps, QR menus and social media included. If you plan to stream series on the long train and coach journeys, go up to 10 GB.

Frequently asked

Do I need to do anything to the eSIM when crossing from Spain into Portugal?

No. The regional eSIM uses partner networks in both countries; when the coach or train crosses the border, your phone joins the Portuguese network within a few seconds. No reinstall, no settings.

Why is internet essential for Sagrada Família and Alhambra tickets?

Both run on a daily visitor quota and sell their tickets online; finding a ticket on the day is rarely possible. For time changes and QR tickets, your phone needs to be connected.

Mallorca, the Canary Islands or Madeira are on my route; are they covered?

Mallorca and Ibiza are covered under Spain. The Canary Islands, the Azores and Madeira are listed separately; if your route reaches them, check the package's coverage list before you buy.

I am in the EU; why does my home SIM still cost so much?

The EU's 'roam like at home' rule only applies to SIMs issued in EU countries. A UK, US, Canadian or Australian carrier is not part of that agreement, so it charges its usual roaming rate in Spain and Portugal alike.
