Athens to the islands, one setup

The classic Greece tour comes in two acts: first Athens; the Acropolis, the narrow streets of Plaka, dinner in Monastiraki. Then the ferry from Piraeus to the Cyclades: the white lanes of Mykonos, the caldera view on Santorini, and most tours give the day in between to Paros or Naxos.

On this route the phone is the remote control for the trip: ferry tickets and timetable changes are tracked in an app, taxis in Athens are called by app, the way to the beach is found on the map, and there is a photo to share at every harbour. A week of roaming on your home SIM means a week of daily charges, or a surprise bill. With the Europe eSIM set up before you board, you are connected the moment you land in Athens; moving between the islands needs no settings at all.

5 GBfor a one-week tour

How much data do you need?

For a week of Athens and the islands, 5 GB is comfortable: maps, ferry apps, messaging and plenty of photo sharing included. If you will be posting stories and video from the islands, choose 10 GB; hotel Wi-Fi on the islands is not always reliable.

Frequently asked

Is there coverage on the islands?

Coverage is good in the towns, harbours and popular beaches; because the eSIM uses local networks, your experience is the same as the Greeks on the island. The signal weakens while the ferry is in open water and returns as you near the port.

What is the internet like on the ferry?

Mobile data works near the coast; drops in open water are normal. Save your ferry ticket and hotel address to your phone before you leave port and sort the rest on arrival.

Should I switch my home SIM off?

No need to switch it off; just turn off data roaming on your home SIM. Your number stays open for calls and texts, and the internet runs through the eSIM.

What happens if the tour runs long or I run out of data?

You can add a top-up from the app before the package runs out; there is no need to reinstall the eSIM. If the route leaves Greece, say by ferry to Italy, the same package keeps working.
