Tbilisi to Kazbegi, one setup
Getting into Georgia is easy: most Western passports enter visa-free, for stays of up to a year. Some fly into Tbilisi's old town, some into Kutaisi and head for the wine country or the Black Sea at Batumi, some take to the roads that climb towards Kazbegi and Svaneti. Affordable, close enough to Europe and surprising every time.
The ease is deceptive: Georgia is outside EU roaming and outside most carriers' roaming passes, so your home SIM falls back to its most expensive rate, or to no data at all. If you are driving, there is navigation; in Tbilisi, the taxi app; on mountain routes, the weather; the need for internet is greater than in a city. Set up the Georgia eSIM before you leave; the moment you land, you are on a local network.
How much data do you need?
For a five-day Georgia trip, 3 GB is balanced: navigation, messaging and photo sharing fit comfortably. If you are driving a long route and sharing plenty of stories, choose 5 GB.
Frequently asked
Do I need a visa for Georgia?
For most Western passports, no: UK, EU, US, Canadian and Australian citizens can stay in Georgia visa-free for up to a year. On the eSIM side there is no ID registration either; the QR code arrives by email, and you set it up before you travel.
I am arriving overland; do I need to do anything to the eSIM at the border?
No. Set up the eSIM at home and select it as your data line; when you cross into Georgia, your phone joins a Georgian network by itself. Remember to turn off data roaming on your home SIM.
Is there signal on the mountain routes (Kazbegi, Svaneti)?
Coverage is good on the main roads and in the towns; on high passes and in remote valleys the signal weakens on every operator. Downloading your route and maps while you still have signal is always wise on a mountain trip.
I visit Georgia often; do I need a new eSIM each time?
If the gaps are short, usually not: adding a top-up to your existing eSIM is enough. An eSIM left without a package for a long time can be closed on the operator's side; then you buy a new one, and setup again takes 2 minutes. Either way it beats the kiosk SIM.
