Cairo to the Red Sea, one setup

For most travellers an Egypt holiday comes in two acts: the pyramids, the Egyptian Museum and an evening on the Nile in Cairo; then sea and reef at an all-inclusive resort in Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh. Five thousand years of history and the corals of the Red Sea in one week.

The 'free Wi-Fi' in the resort brochure usually ends at the lobby; in the rooms and on the beach the connection is weak, and paid daily packages are no surprise. On the Cairo side, haggling, taxi apps and museum tickets all run on internet. With the Egypt eSIM you skip the SIM queue at the airport and carry your own connection through both acts of the holiday.

How much data do you need?

For a week in Egypt, 3 to 5 GB is a balanced choice: maps, messaging, photos and short daily calls fit comfortably. If you plan to stream films and series at the resort, take 10 GB; hotel Wi-Fi rarely carries that load.

Frequently asked

Do WhatsApp calls work in Egypt?

Messaging and photo sending work without trouble. Voice and video calls are at times restricted by the operators in Egypt; that is a country-wide matter, regardless of which SIM you use. Messages and ordinary internet use are not affected.

Why would I need an eSIM when the resort has Wi-Fi?

Resort Wi-Fi is mostly limited to the lobby and slow; room and beach coverage is weak. With the eSIM your connection stays with you on the boat trip, the desert safari and the day trip to Cairo.

Do I need internet for taxis in Cairo?

Strongly recommended. Ride-hailing apps in Cairo take the haggling out of it and show the fare up front; in the tourist areas that makes a real difference.

Should I set up the eSIM before I leave home?

Yes, that is the easiest way. Set it up at home on Wi-Fi; the package usually activates the first time you connect to an Egyptian network. When you land, your phone connects by itself.
